The Armor of God is made to protect us spiritually in every way. We need to remember that we cannot fight our battles on our own. Ephesians 6:12 states that, “We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against powers and rulers of darkness”. We wrestle against Satan himself! We can’t do this on our own. We must have God’s help.
The Helmet of the Hope of Salvation ( 1 Thessalonians 5:8) This piece is an assurance of God’s protection. When we trust that God will deliver us from sin, we can be assured that ‘if we confess our sins and repent, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness’ (1 John 1:9). This does not mean that we can sin any time we want as long as we repent, instead, we need to keep out of trouble. When we do slip into trouble, instead of beating ourselves up over it, we need to trust God according to the promise of 1 John 1:9.
The Shield of Faith is important in that with it we will smash all of Satan’s temptations. The shield will be large or small according to our measure of faith. The more we exercise faith, by trusting in God, the larger the shield, and the larger the shield, the greater the temptation we will be able to stand. Our faith will be tested but only as much as we are able to take (1 Corinthians 10:13). God will not let Satan tempt us more than we can stand by trusting in Him. When we trust in God, we will not be let down.
There are many different versions of the Sword of the Spirit, (personally I like the New King James Version) but all have the same Maker. God’s word comes in many translations. The sword is very strong and will not break, no matter how hard the foe. The more you use your sword, the sharper it gets. By memorizing scripture, and the contemplation of spiritual themes through Bible study, we sharpen our sword. As you use God’s word, the more skilled you become in its use. Soon you will be able to parry and thrust, with God’s help, and fight Satan’s temptations.
The Breastplate of Righteousness protects your heart and vital organs. It protects Satan’s attacks on your character. Our righteousness is as dirty rags, we don’t stand a chance against Satan. Only by hiding ourselves in Christ will we be able to survive. We must ask God for His righteousness. My righteousness is as bad, and terrible as yours, but under God’s righteousness, we are all the same.
The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace enable us to move with ease around the battle field. As we share God’s word, we will find that we aren’t losing track of our purpose, and are not as readily stumbling into sin. The gospel keeps us from losing track of our aim and goal, providing sure footing.
The Belt of Truth is a guard of what we will believe. Will we believe God’s truth or Satan’s lies. What we believe greatly affects how we think.
Remember that as you use your armor, you will become more skilled in its use. So ask God for help as you fight your battles against Satan’s temptations.
